Introducing course

Global travel has exploded in the last decade with more young people than ever travelling for fun, to volunteer, study or live abroad. However, often these same young people have never travelled internationally or alone. They don’t have experience preparing to be safe and are often unaware of what could go wrong so don’t respond well when they’re in danger or an emergency occurs. So many young people are really flying blind when it comes to their safety and the results can be deadly.

As travel security specialist, we have 18 years’ experience working with people travelling internationally and have provided security training to thousands of people working all over the world.

This course will teach young people how they can get information about where they’re going, how to evaluate that information, what travel documents they need, how laws in other countries affect them, what insurance they need and how to choose safe travel and accommodation.

We help young people understand how their security is their own responsibility and how their behaviour and choices can have a dramatic impact on their well-being. We talk about mental health issues, drugs and alcohol use, sex and dating during travel.

We cover what we know really well – how to deal with aggressive and violent situations, avoid travel scams prevent theft and robbery, deal with road traffic accidents, medical emergencies, sexual harassment and violence as well as things like fire, earthquake and severe weather.

And, perhaps most importantly, we teach young people to resiliently handle situations when things go wrong. What they should do in an emergency, reporting to authorities, dealing with insurance, getting medical treatment and what an embassy will – and won’t – do.
